If you wish to import a car from another country or have recently moved to the United States and want to take your car with you, you'll need to follow the law to the letter.

Obtain the correct and updated documents for your car. Everything from the bill of sale to the registration should be on hand. Keep this together in a folder to provide to U.S. Customs when requested.

Detail and thoroughly clean the car you wish to import. Make sure everything from the glove box to the undercarriage is clean and like new. The U.S. Department of Agriculture will inspect your car for any dirt to prevent pests from being imported with the car.

Look into the proper requirements of the state you wish to import your car. Make the proper adjustments and upgrades to meet the U.S. and state's requirements. Pay all the necessary fees for your import. Contact the U.S. Customs Department to get the current rates on fees and exceptions for importing cars.
