How to Register for GED Classes

How to Register for GED Classes thumbnail
Getting a GED starts with finding a program in your state.

Administered by the American Council on Education (ACE), the General Educational Development or GED measures an adult's high school knowledge level. Passing the GED certifies an adult has achieved a high school level of knowledge. GED certification is equivalent to a high school diploma. Most individuals who take the GED test need to take classes to prepare for the test. GED class offerings vary by state so to register, you will need to check with your state for registration information. Many states offer classes for free or involve minimal costs such as the exam fee.

Instructions

    • 1

Navigate to the ACE website and type "GED Preparation Contacts by State" in the Search field and click "Go." Click the "GED Preparation Contacts by State" link and find your state's contact information link. Click, email or call the GED representative to find where classes are held in your state.

    • 2

Use the ACE Testing Center to search for a GED Testing Center near you. Call the testing center to ask for registration information for GED classes.

    • 3

Point your browser to the National Institute for Literacy's Literacy Directory. Fill out the online form to search for a GED class near you. Call or write to see about registration information.

Expect to provide your name, address, phone and Social Security numbers on registration forms. Registration for most states includes providing a high school transcript and paying all applicable fees. For many states, you take a series of short tests in reading and math to determine your level for placement in the GED preparatory system.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can also check your phone book and ask for information from your local library or school board office. Other places to look, suggests ACE, are adult or continuing education programs at community colleges and universities.

  • You can also prepare for the GED test by studying on your own. Other ways to prepare for taking the GED exam include studying on your own using videos and workbooks available at PBS's LiteracyLink.

  • You cannot take the GED online. If a website offers to let you take the GED online, save your money and don't register for the test. It is not an official GED exam and will not be accepted as an alternative high school diploma, according to ACE. You can find online preparatory sample tests to help you study for a GED exam at PBS's LiteracyLink or Steck-Vaughn's GED Practice.
