How to Reduce Chlorine in a Pool
Adding chlorine to your pool helps to kill unwanted germs and gets rid of algae. But too much chlorine can be a dangerous, and even deadly, thing. If you feel that there's too much chlorine in your pool, you should stay out of it until you lower the level. You can reduce the amount of chlorine in your pool, but first you'll have to see just how much you have to get rid of.

1
Calculate how much water you have in your pool. The standard formula for volume is height times width times length.
-
2
Test your pool water with a chlorine testing kit to find out exactly how much chlorine is in your pool. A basic test kit will come with strips that you dip in the water momentarily and that change color to indicate the amount of chlorine. You then compare the color with a chart to find out how much chlorine you have in ppm (parts per million).

3
Calculate how much thiosulfate you need to add to your pool by using the calculator located in the Resources section. You'll need to enter the volume of water in your pool, the amount of FAC chlorine (in ppm) and the level you want your chlorine to be at. A good range for FAC chlorine is between 2 and 4 ppm. However, you don't want there to be less than 1 ppm.
-
4
Add the proper amount of thiosulfate to your pool after you've calculated it. Wait several hours for the chemical to take effect.
-
5
Test the chlorine level once more to make sure that it's at a healthy level (between 2 and 4 ppm).
