Instructions

    • 1

Measure the dimensions of the ground level of your home using a tape measure. If you have plans or blueprints for your home, consult them to find your home's measurements.

    • 2

Calculate the square footage of the ground floor of your home based on measurements from step 1. If your home is box-shaped, simply multiply the length of the home by the width to estimate square footage.

    • 3

Go to the "ImproveNet: Roofing Estimator" website (see resources); enter your ZIP code in the space provided; enter the appropriate information about your home and roof in all the dropdown fields, such as home square footage, roof pitch and the roofing material you want to use; and click "Calculate Estimate." A cost estimate will appear on the next page.

    • 4

Go to the "RoofingCalculator: Calculate roofing prices now!" site (see resources), enter the measurements taken in step 1 under "roof dimensions," fill in the other information fields according to your home's features and click "Calculate roof price." A list of roofing price estimates will appear for several different types of roofing materials. This tool can help you compare the cost of different roofing materials.

    • 5

Go to the "Newenglandmetalroof: Cost Calculator" site (see resources) enter the dimensions of your home, the desired roofing material and the other required information and then click "Calculate the roof cost." A cost estimate will appear. This tool is most accurate for homes in the northeast region of the U.S.

Tips & Warnings

  • Getting several different estimates can help produce a more accurate expectation about costs.

  • When you decide to go ahead with installing a new roof, you will have to get price estimates from roofing contractors. Estimates received by contractors may not match estimates formed on your own; personal estimates can form a general ballpark price, but the actual cost of construction can vary by region and according to special considerations specific to your home.
