How to Apply for Federal Pell Grants
The Federal Pell grant is usually awarded to undergraduate students who are in need of financial assistance to help pay for some educational expenses. You are not required to pay back the Federal Pell grant and as of November 2010, the grant amount can be as high as $5,500 per semester. You can apply for the Federal Pell grant online.

Retrieve your Social Security number and the numbers to everyone else that resides in your household, including your parents. Retrieve a copy of yours and/or your parent's most recent 1040-tax return, driver's license numbers and bank account statements.

Visit the FAFSA website (see Resources) and click the link to apply for a PIN as soon as you decide that you want to attend college. The faster you apply for your PIN and complete your application increases the likelihood that you will get funding. The PIN allows you to sign your FAFSA application electronically.

Wait until you receive your PIN in the mail to continue with your application.

Return to the FAFSA website and click the tab "Filling out FAFSA." Click the link "Start."

Enter your information and the information for your parents (if applicable) into the appropriate fields on the online application. You will be asked to enter your first and last name, address, Social Security number and the same information for your parents. In addition, you will have to provide yours and/or your parent's AGI (Adjusted Gross Income) from your most recent tax return and the school codes from the colleges that you are considering to attend.

Enter your PIN number into the appropriate field and click "Submit." A Student Aid Report (SAR) will arrive in the mail after a few weeks. The report notifies you as to what aid you will receive and the amount. Retain this report for your records.
