On the bottom of the transmission on the 2002 Honda Civic EX is a 3/8 inch bolt that is the drain plug. The 2002 Honda Civic EX does not use a fluid filter because the transmission fluid in needs to be changed every 10,000 or 15,000 miles as stated in the owners manual. You will need a few basic tools to gain access to the bottom of the transmission. You can change the transmission fluid in this car in less than one hour.
Things You'll Need
- Jack stand
- Drain pan
- 3/8 inch socket
- 3 1/2 quarts manual transmission fluid
Raise the right front side of the Honda Civic using the jack. Lower the frame onto a jack stand for support.
Place the drain pan under the drain nut on the bottom of the transmission. Remove the nut using the ratchet and socket.
Drain the fluid into the drain pan and then replace and tighten the nut. Remove the drain pan from under the transmission.
Lower the frame to the ground. Open the hood and remove the red dipstick from the engine. Pour the transmission fluid into the dipstick tube. Replace the dipstick and close the hood.
