Print a Certificate Correctly

Most homemade certificates are created using document templates or style sheets that come with, or are designed for, your word processing software. Unfortunately, some certificates don't always print as planned, and it's usually because of mistakes made in printer setup. Before attempting to print a certificate, familiarize yourself with your Print Menu's settings and options. With a few minor adjustments to Print Properties, creating certificates can be a rewarding experience.

Instructions

    • 1

Open "File" then "Print/Properties" and select the proper page orientation. If your certificate is wider than it is long, choose Landscape mode. Use the Portrait setting for certificates that are longer than they are wide.

    • 2

Select the correct paper source. Most certificates are larger and/or thicker than a standard piece of paper. Use the Manual Feed or Sheet Feeder option for printing certificates larger than 8½ inches x 11 inches or from heavy paper stock.

    • 3

Pick the media type that matches the size and coating (such as glossy) of your unprinted page. Enter custom dimensions if your certificate is an odd size.

    • 4

Choose your printer's "Preview Before Printing" option to review an onscreen image of your certificate, before it goes to print. Select "File" and "Print Preview" before printing, if the option is unavailable.

Tips & Warnings

  • Setup procedures and options vary per printer. Read your owner's manual for proper operating instructions.

  • Using the wrong paper source for heavier stock can cause paper jams in your printer. Check your owner's manual if you are unsure of which paper source to select.

  • Not all printers reset themselves. Restore print properties to their default settings when you are done. Otherwise, normal documents may not print correctly thereafter.
