How to Find the Rating of My Life Insurance Company
You bought life insurance to provide for your family in the event of your death, but the policy is only as good as the insurance company that wrote it. By checking your life insurance company's financial rating with one of the financial rating agencies, you can see for yourself how well the company is equipped to pay claims on the policies it has in force. A moderate or inadequate rating may mean that it is in your best interest to find a different insurer for your family's needs.

1
Browse to either the A.M. Best website, the Standard & Poor's website or both. These are the top financial rating agencies and they both track the solvency and overall health of life insurance companies.
-
2
Register with whichever website you choose. Registration is free on both sites. With A.M. Best, click the "sign-up" link in the "Member Center" area located on most pages within the site. With Standard & Poor's, click the "register" link at the top of most pages.

3
Go to the insurance page on the site you choose. With A.M. Best, you can choose life/health insurance specifically.
-
4
Search for your life insurance company. A.M. Best allows you to search according to the criteria you wish to find, such as financial strength. Tips & Warnings
You can search for Standard & Poor's ratings from websites other than the official site, without registering (see Resources).
Each rating company has its own rating system. They are similar but not the same. See Resources for a list of each company's ratings that would apply to your life insurer.
