Instructions

    • 1

Cast on 80 stitches with your size eight circular needles. Use a marker to mark the beginning of your stitches so you know when you have completed one whole loop.

    • 2

Stitch the brim of the hat so you have 4 1/2 inches of ribbed stitches. Ribbed stitch can be made by knitting two regular stitches, purl stitching two stitches and so on.

    • 3

Fold up the brim and begin knitting the body of the hat.

    • 4

Continue knitting using regular knit stitches until the body of the hat is three inches long.

    • 5

Close the brim of the toque by knitting seven stitches. After the seventh stitch, knit two stitches together. Continue this pattern until you knit all the way back to your needle marker.

    • 6

Transfer your stitches over to size seven, double-pointed straight needles to make the project a bit easier. To do this, push the stitches closer together and knit one full round using the new needles. You will need three needles to hold the stitches.

    • 7

Continue decreasing using a fourth double-pointed needle. To do this, complete six regular stitches and after the sixth stitch, knit two together. Continue this pattern, decreasing after five stitches and then after four stitches.

    • 8

Transfer your stitches over to a size six, double-pointed straight needle by knitting one regular row onto the new needles.

    • 9

Continue decreasing, this time in increments of three stitches and then two stitches.

    • 10

Transfer your stitches over to a size five, double-pointed straight needle by knitting one regular row onto the new needles.

    • 11

Decrease after one stitch so that every other stitch you make is a double stitch. Continue knitting this way until the opening of the hat is almost closed.

    • 12

Finish closing the hat by threading the yarn into your blunt eye needle. Slide off the stitches of the next row onto the needle. Pull the thread through the stitches. Continue this until you have threaded the stitches off the two remaining needles. Pull the string as tight as you can, then tie and cut the string.
