How to Pay for a Divorce Attorney
Getting a divorce is sometimes an expensive endeavor. Lawyers cost money, and good lawyers cost more. If you have a spouse that managed to lower the funds in your bank accounts before leaving, or controls the purse strings, then paying for a lawyer to make sure you are protected during the divorce proceedings can be a challenge.

1
Visit a divorce lawyer that offers free consultations. This is a good place to start, and you might be able to work out some type of payment system.
-
2
Ask family for help. If they are on your side, they might be willing to help you get out of a bad situation. They might even know an attorney that could cut you a break or work based on what your settlement will be.

3
Contact help groups or your church. Depending on the reason for the divorce, such as abuse, there might be some funds available to help you pay for a divorce lawyer. Also, even though churches usually frown on divorce, under certain circumstances, such as spouse or child abuse or even lack of faith of the spouse, the church might be willing to help.

4
Contact your region's bar association to see if it has any listings for low-cost attorneys or those willing to do pro bono work to help gain more experience. There might be some lawyers having to work off punishments for procedural misconduct that also need to do pro bono work.
-
5
Sell some items that are yours and cannot be contested in the divorce, such as jewelry. These are gifts and yours to do with as you please.
