Reduce red eyes with Windows photo software.

The appearance of glowing red eyes in family photos is a common occurrence. Red eyes appear typically when the flash is used, and the light from the flash is reflected in the subject’s eyes. This reflection appears as glowing red due to the amount of blood vessels in a person’s eyes, according to Photocritic.org. Many photo management applications include basic photo editing capabilities, including red-eye reduction. The software can detect the redness and bring the eyes back to a more natural state. Easily remove red eyes from your pictures using the photo management application included with Windows.

Instructions

    • 1

Open “Windows Photo Gallery” via the Start menu.

    • 2

Import your pictures or add your folder of pictures if they are not already in Windows Photo Gallery. Select “File > Include a folder in the gallery...” or “File > Import from a camera or scanner...” and follow the instructions to add your pictures.

    • 3

Select the picture you want to adjust and click “Fix.” The cursor will turn into a “+” crosshair icon.

    • 4

Drag the crosshairs across one of the eyes, forming a box around the red eye. Windows Photo Gallery will automatically reduce the red-eye. Repeat for the second eye. If the first pass did not completely reduce the red-eye, you can repeat it on each eye until it is gone.

Tips & Warnings

  • Windows Photo Gallery is available as a free download if it did not ship with your operating system (Microsoft decided to offer it as a free download instead of bundling it with Windows 7). See Resources for download page.
