How to Change an Agitator Brush Belt on a Kenmore Vacuum Cleaner

The agitator (or brush) on your Kenmore vacuum cleaner is controlled by the agitator belt. You may need to replace the belt because of normal wear and tear or because of a heavy buildup of string, hair or lint in the brush area. Replacing the belt is easy for just about anyone to do. The replacement belts are readily available in most Sears locations and in many hardware stores. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Disconnect the power cord from the electrical outlet. Turn the vacuum upside down so the brush is visible and easily accessible.

    • 2

Unlock the base plate by sliding the left latch toward the right and the right latch toward the left. Push the locking tabs toward the center of the vacuum to remove the base plate.

    • 3

Lift each end of the brush assembly to remove. If the belt is still attached to the brush assembly, tension will be felt on the brush. Be careful when removing the brush when the belt tension is high.

    • 4

Remove the end cap and washer located on each end, clear of any debris, then replace.

    • 5

Loop one end of the new belt around the motor shaft. Loop the other end of the belt on the belt pulley of the brush, making sure that the belt is centered in the groove of the pulley.

    • 6

Replace the base plate by inserting the tabs into the slots of the base until they snap back into place. Slide the right latch to the right and the left latch to the left for a secure hold.

Tips & Warnings

  • Frequent removal of debris in the agitator area will keep your vacuum cleaner working efficiently. Weekly cleaning should be done for heavy use, monthly cleaning for moderate use and every two months for light use.

  • To prevent electrical shock or personal injury, disconnect the electrical supply before servicing or cleaning the unit.

  • Use caution when removing or replacing the brush assembly when the belt tension is high.
