PVC is a popular material to use because it comes in so many different forms.

PVC boards are used to build furniture, decks and exterior walls. PVC is a popular building material, and it has several different applications because of the variety of forms it comes in. Cleaning PVC board is not difficult, nor does it take special products. The best part is, cleaning PVC board doesn't take a lot of time. It takes about as much energy as cleaning the kitchen, but you do need to be safe and wear eye protection as well as respiratory protection. Does this Spark an idea?

Things You'll Need

  • Safety goggles
  • Respiratory mask
  • Acetone
  • 000 steel wool

Instructions

      Put on the safety goggles and the respiratory mask. You should also work in a well-ventilated area if possible.

      Soak the 000 steel wool in a small container of acetone until the steel wool has absorbed into the fibers.

      Scrub the PVC boards with the steel wool in 2-foot sections. Once all the dirt, debris, and markings are off the PVC boards, rinse them in warm water. If you are not in an area where you can get the ground wet, wipe them clean with a damp cloth.

      Repeat until the entire section of boards are clean. Rinse out the steel wool or throw it away.

Tips & Warnings

  • A nylon scouring pad is an acceptable substitute for the steel wool. If you use a scouring pad, wear rubber gloves to avoid prolonged skin exposure to acetone. It can cause skin irritations.

  • Depending on the brand of acetone, it may stain your clothes, so wear old clothes you don't mind becoming discolored. Do not ingest acetone. Call poison control immediately if it is ingested.
