The "lemon battery experiment" is a classic science experiment that can be conducted by just about anybody to help them understand how batteries work. With a nail and a penny to act as the battery's electrodes and the lemon juice to as its electrolytes, you can construct a lemon battery in just three steps.

  • Lemon
  • Knife
  • Copper penny
  • Galvanized nail

Instructions

      Cut a slit the width of a penny on one end of the lemon with a knife.

    • 2

      Insert a penny halfway into the slit.

    • 3

      Insert a galvanized nail into the opposite end of the lemon, directly opposite the penny. The nail is the battery's negative terminal and the penny is the positive terminal.

Tips & Warnings

  • The nail and the penny cannot be touching inside of the lemon.
