DIY Motorcycle GPS

A GPS device will help you to navigate when riding your motorcycle.

A global positioning system (GPS) allows you to use satellite technology to navigate in unfamiliar territory so you won't get lost while traveling. If you would like to make your own GPS device you can do so with a mobile phone and free piece of software. You can then use a mounting kit to place the device on your motorcycle so it can sit safely on the handle bars.

Things You'll Need

  • Mobile GPS software
  • Motorcycle mounting kit

Instructions

    • 1

Get a mobile phone that is Internet-ready.

    • 2

Register for an unlimited data plan. You can do this by calling the customer service department at your cell phone company.

    • 3

Select a GPS application which is compatible with your mobile phone.

    • 4

Register for your GPS application. Provide a user ID, a password, and your mobile number along with your email address. You will receive a confirmation message as a Short Message Service (SMS) text and an email with a download link.

    • 5

Open up your mobile phone's web browser. Open the text message or email that you received and click on the download link for software. Install the application by clicking on the downloaded file. The installation will begin. If prompted to restart your phone do so for the change to be complete.

    • 6

Go to the "Applications" menu and click on the program icon of your newly installed GPS application.  Press "Select" and the application screen should now appear. A map of your area will appear with a small blinking dot at the center. This dot signifies your current location in real time.

Purchase a cell phone mount for your motorcycle. This allows you to attach your cell phone to the area of your bike near the clutch-lever clamp. You can buy one online. Attach the mount by replacing the bolts at the sides of the clutch mount with the ball attachment that comes with your purchased mount.
