Set the print characters by first pulling the knob on the right (if you're holding the printer and looking at it from above) all the way out, so that all the characters are visible from the top of the labeler. Twist the knob until you reach your desired character. Move the knob inward to the next character to change the next character. Repeat until all the characters appear the way you want them. If there is a character you would like to leave blank, use the blank space character for that.

Load labels into the device by first pushing the release button located on the top of the device. This will allow you to swing open the cover until it catches with an audible click. Unwrap the new labels and remove the outer layer. Peel the first 12 or 13 labels from their backing. Insert the label roll into the very center of the pivot point of the open labeler with the label direction coming over the top of the roll (not from underneath). Don't thread the labels through rollers. Center the peeled backing portion of the roll over the peel bar (located at the mouth of the machine). Allow the excess to hang over the edge about six to seven inches. Rotate the cover back into a closed position. Take the label slack and feed it through the lower roller underneath the mouth of the labeler where the arrows are pointing. Squeeze the trigger while making sure the strip doesn't come loose from the lower roller. Continue squeezing the trigger until the strips come out of the back of the labeler.

Install an ink roller by first opening the labeler cover. Remove the packaging from the ink roller and grasp it from each end with your free hand. Snap the roller into the roller clip located on the mouth of the labeler. Remove an empty ink roller by opening the labeler cover, grasping the roller by both ends with your fingers and pushing the release bar (located just above the ink roller) to dislodge the roller.

Pull the labeler trigger to produce labels using the character settings, labels and ink you just installed. The labels should come out of the mouth of the labeler in such a way that you can apply them to objects with the labeler itself. Change the characters as necessary.
