How to Replace the Front Brake Pads on a 2007 Town & Country
Your 2007 Chrysler Town & Country's front brake pads will tend to wear out more often than the rear brakes, because the bulk of the momentum is transferred to the front of the vehicle whenever you use your brakes. As such, it is a good practice to replace your front brake pads every 50,000 to 55,000 miles. Rather than hiring a mechanic for this common maintenance issue, you can replace the front brake pads yourself. When doing so, make sure the brake discs are not worn in any way, as this will reduce the effectiveness of your new brake pads.
Things You'll Need
- Ratchet and socket
- Jack
- Jack stands
- Fluid extraction suction tool
- Tire tool
- C-clamp
Instructions
-
-
1
Set the emergency brake and make sure the car is parked on a flat surface.
-
2
Detach the negative terminal cable from the battery with a ratchet and socket.
-
-
3
Drain most, but not all, of the brake fluid from the master cylinder using a fluid extraction suction tool.
-
4
Remove the front hubcaps with a tire tool and loosen the lug nuts with the tire tool's lug wrench.
-
5
Raise the front of the car with a jack, place jack stands beneath the axle on either side, and slowly lower the jack until the car rests upon the stands.
-
6
Remove the lug nuts with the lug wrench, and remove the wheel with your hands. Unbolt the two primary caliper mounting bolts, located on the top and bottom of one side of the caliper, with a ratchet and socket.
-
7
Remove the brake hose from the caliper and slide the caliper up and off the brake rotor with your hands.
-
8
Remove the brake pads from the caliper with your hands.
-
9
Retract the caliper piston using a C-clamp. Be sure to use one of the old brake pads between the C-clamp and the bottom of the piston for protection.
-
10
Insert the new brake pad and release the C-clamp from the piston.
-
11
Reinstall the caliper on the brake rotor and reattach the brake hose. Repeat on the other side of the car.
-
12
Reattach the wheel, remove the jack stands and lower the car with the jack.
-
13
Refill the master cylinder with brake fluid and reconnect the negative terminal to the battery.
-
14
Start the car and pump the brake several times to allow the brake pads to settle in place.
