How to Find a Kentucky Inmate

How to Find a Kentucky Inmate thumbnail
The Kentucky Offender Online Lookup (KOOL) makes finding most adult inmates relatively easy.

The state of Kentucky houses thousands of inmates in 13 state-run correctional facilities and two private institutions, making the process of finding one individual seem like an imposing task. Nonetheless, if an inmate is an adult and has been housed for more than 120 days, they can generally be located in the Kentucky Offender Online Lookup system (KOOL). Bear in mind that the state of Kentucky updates this system regularly but does not guarantee the information will be 100 percent accurate.

Instructions

    • 1

Visit the Kentucky Department of Corrections website. Read all disclaimers concerning the Kentucky Offender Online Lookup (KOOL) system.

    • 2

Select the link leading to the KOOL system search engine.

    • 3

Enter the inmate's first, middle and last name. If you believe the name you've entered might be an alias or if you are simply unsure, select the alias option to the right. Less information will return more results. Leaving all fields blank will return a list of all inmates housed in the Kentucky Department of Corrections system. For a more precise search, select the "Advanced Search Option" beneath the "Record Sort Order" drop-down menu. Here you have the option of entering the inmate ID, race, age, institution, gender, indictment number, conviction date, conviction county and the institutionalization or incarceration date. Be sure to enter all dates in the appropriate YYYY/MM/DD format.

    • 4

Select "Record Sort Order" from the drop-down menu. By default, search engine returns will sort by inmate's last and first name in alphabetical order. Other options include returns by inmate's System Person Number (SPN) or inmate ID, inmate's institution and SPN or inmate's institution followed by last and first name.

    • 5

Search for your inmate in the database returns. If you entered relatively little information, or if the inmate's name is common, you could receive several hundred returns. Therefore, it is best to enter as much information as you know. Search returns will list the inmate's name, current institution, SPN and offenses.

    • 6

Select the inmate's number, at the left of the search engine returns. From there you will be taken to a detailed screen, which will include the previous information, detailed demographics about the inmate in question, a current offender photo, conviction information and parole status.
