How to Operate Gas Log Fireplaces
Gas log fireplaces are becoming increasingly popular. They come in a variety of styles and designs, along with different operating methods. Some turn on with a switch and some with a dial, or a remote control. Some have variable settings for flame height or to set the temperature. There are two basic types: vented or vent-free, and both types require a professional to install them either in your fireplace or in a wood-burning stove. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Install the vented type of gas logs in a fireplace so the fumes can go up the chimney. This type has a "dirty" flame, which produces a yellow flame similar to real wood. Add any additional logs, branches or pine cones to give it a more realistic look.

2
Install the vent-free style in a wood-burning stove or fake fireplace. There are little to no fumes with a vent-free style because they burn cleaner with the same burner design as a gas stove. Remove any wood surfaces above the the fireplace because this type of gas log fireplace burns hotter.
