If ever in doubt about what to do, phone local police.

Under Ontario law, you must report a traffic accident to the police if anyone suffers a personal injury or dies, if estimated damage to a vehicle comes to more than $1,000 or if you have any reason to suspect a criminal act, such as driving under the influence of alcohol, has taken place. This law is intended to put evidence on the record in case of criminal or civil claims, as well as help facilitate insurance claims. The Ontario provincial government provides some basic guidelines for reporting an auto accident.

      Call 911 to report an automobile accident in cases of emergency.

      Call the local police in non-emergencies. If you don't know the number, phone Ontario Police at1-888-310-1122 to find out.

      Call the nearest collision reporting center. If you don't know the number, phone 416-745-3301 for information.

      Provide details such as your driver's licence number, insurance information, registration plate number and your name and address to the collision center and any police officer at the scene who requests it.

      Describe what happened clearly and factually, without giving your interpretation or apportioning blame.

      Collect the same information from other involved parties, such as witnesses and drivers, to provide if requested.

      Remain at the scene of the accident until a police officer tells you you can leave.

      Phone your insurance company within seven days to report the incident. This is a legal requirement.
