How do I Install a Trailer Hitch Receiver on a 2002 Chevy S10?

The 2002 Chevy S10 came with an optional V6 engine. This means the Chevy is capable of towing a trailer. However, a hitch receiver was not a factory option, so if you want to tow a trailer, you have to install the hitch receiver yourself. Fortunately, you do not have to remove much from the frame before you can install the hitch. With a second person, you can quickly install your hitch receiver.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate the tow hook on the rear of the frame. The tow hook is used by tow trucks in the event they need to pull your S10 out of a ditch. The tow hooks should be on the driver's side of the frame across from the rear shock. If your truck is equipped with a tow hook, remove the four bolts that secure it to the frame, using a socket and ratchet. Remove the hook from the vehicle. If your S10 does not have a tow hook installed, skip this step.

Place the hitch receiver against the bottom of the rear frame and mark the mounting drilled into the receiver onto the frame, using a black marker. Have a second person hold up the other side of the receiver against the passenger side frame and have them mark the holes on their side. If you do not have a second person, you can use a bottle jack to jack the receiver against the frame while you work on the other side.

Lower the receiver out of the way and then drill the holes in the frame, using the black dots you created as a reference.

    • 4

Place the receiver against the frame and line up the holes.

    • 5

Place a washer onto the bolt and push the bolt up through the receiver and frame. Place a lock washer onto the bolt and thread the nut onto the bolt. Do not tighten with a socket and ratchet until you repeat this process for each bolt hole on both sides of the receiver. The bolts, washers, lock washers and nuts should come with the receiver when you purchase it.
