How to Create Personalized License Plates in Ohio

How to Create Personalized License Plates in Ohio thumbnail
Ohio drivers may request personalized license plates.

Ohio permits state residents to create their own personalized license plates. Personalized plates are available on both specialty and standard issue plates and allow state residents to place a personal saying or expression on their selected license plate, as long as the statement is between three and seven characters long. Before a personalized plate is issued, you must request a plate and ensure you meet all of the state's personalization requirements.

Instructions

Select the plate design you like. Ohio offers personalized plates on its standard issue plate as well as all specialty plates. The number of characters allowed on a plate is based on the plate design selected. Most plates allow seven characters, while specialty plates with a logo can have up to six characters. Plates for motorcycles may have up to five characters.

Develop your personalized statement. Ohio requires at least four letters on all personalized plates. The remaining characters may be any combination of letters, numbers or spaces that you prefer. Select several personalization options, as the Bureau of Motor Vehicles will issue you a substitute choice if your first option is unavailable or cannot be issued.

Request your personalized Ohio license plate. You may order plates online, through the state's Oplates.com website, at a local Deputy Registrar's office or by calling the Bureau of Motor Vehicles at 866-675-2837. If you purchase plates through the deputy's office, you will be issued your registration card and stickers in person and receive a temporary permit for you to use while your personalized plates are being manufactured.

Pay all fees and receive your plates. As of November 2010, the fee for a special plate in Ohio is $50, in addition to your regular vehicle registration fees. A $7.50 new plate fee is also charged, unless you are registering the vehicle for the first time or it has not had Ohio plates for the previous 12 months. All personalized plates are sent to the address listed on your vehicle registration after they have been manufactured.
