Homemade Letter Stencils

You can buy letter stencils cheaply at many craft stores, but making your own can be both fulfilling and practical. After all, if you make your own stencils, you can create them in any font that you would like, as well as in any size. This enables you to customize any art or building project properly. Although it may seem that it will take a long time to create your own letter stencils, you may find yourself spending less time on the project than you'd expected.

Things You'll Need

  • Pencil
  • Paper
  • Copy machine (optional)
  • Masking tape
  • Wooden plank
  • Craft knife
  • Double-sided masking tape (optional)
  • Repositionable spray adhesive (optional)

Instructions

    • 1

Draw the letters that you would like on a piece of paper. Alternatively, copy the letters in a font that you like from a book or another sign, and enlarge the letters, using a copy machine, until they are the proper size.

    • 2

Tape each letter onto a piece of clear acetate that is a bit larger than the letter. Make sure that the paper and the acetate are very securely attached to each other.

    • 3

Place the taped paper and acetate on a hard surface that you don't mind ruining, such as a spare plank of wood. Tape it to the wood surface.

    • 4

Cut around the outer edge of the letter with a craft knife. Cut out any inner areas as well.

    • 5

Remove all tape and discard the paper and the cut-out portions, leaving only the acetate stencil behind.

Tips & Warnings

  • For letters that have inner chads, such as the letter "B," consider making a second stencil that has only those chads removed. Then use this stencil to figure out where the inner chad should go when painting the letter. You can secure the chad in place with double-sided masking tape.
  • You can create sticky stencils (which are easier to use) by spraying repositionable spray adhesive on the back of the stencils.
