How to Hook Up Above-Ground Pool Pumps & Filters

Get your above ground pool water crystal clear with a filter and pump.

Above ground pool pumps and filters are easier to set up than an in ground system. Locate them in an area close to where they can connect to power and the pool itself and where the powerful backwash stream will not damage anything as it cleans the pump out. Gravity will send the water from the pool skimmer to the pump, where it is pumped into the filter, cleaned and re-circulated back to the pool. Connect the hoses and the power to be ready to use the system.

Things You'll Need

• Pool hoses (2)
• Pump to filter hose (1)
• Metal clamps
• Screwdriver
• Teflon plumbers tape

Instructions

1. Set the pool pump and filter system by your pump's power source and close enough to the pool skimmer for your hoses to reach and connect them together. (See Reference 1) This should be on a flat dry surface, preferably on paving stones.

2. Attach the first hose to the bottom of the pool skimmer outlet by sliding it over the outlet spout and securing it with a metal clamp holding it in place. Now, attach the other end of this hose to the inlet on the pool pump with another metal clamp in the same manner. Pull on both connections with your hands to make sure they are tight.

3. Attach the next hose to the pump outlet and to the filter inlet as per manufacturer's instructions. This hose is usually shorter and fatter than the other two hoses connected to the pools skimmer and inlet and will install according to manufacturer's directions. Make sure these connections are tight.

4. Attach the second pool hose to the filter outlet by again sliding the end of the hose over the spout and securing it with another metal clamp. Slide the other end of this hose over the pool inlet spout on the side of your pool and secure it with the metal clamps.

5. Fill the pool up to the skimmer level and turn on the pump with the filter in the circulate setting. Inspect for leaks and tighten connections as needed.

Tips & Warnings

• Keep overgrowth of weeds or grass away from the pump to improve circulation and efficiency.

• Turn off the pool pump before adjusting the setting on the filter to avoid damaging the filter seals.

• The power for the pump should be installed according to local codes and by a qualified electrician.
