How to Repair a Single Moen Tub Faucet

When the single-handle Moen tub faucet starts to leak, the problem resides inside of the faucet in the cartridge system. This is where the two valves for the hot and cold water are located. After extended periods of use, the valve seals wear and split, causing water to leak through them. Replacing the cartridge repairs this problem in about 20 minutes and gets your faucet back in shape. Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the water. Shut both valves behind the shower wall using your access panel or turn off the incoming water line to the entire home.

    • 2

Take the handle off the unit by removing the cap on the handle and then loosening the screw under the cap with an Allen wrench or screwdriver (depending on the screw head). The handle slides off after this screw is loosened sufficiently.

    • 3

Pry the retaining clip from around the cartridge. Usually, inserting the screwdriver under the clip and prying it up removes this part. Or use a pair of pliers to grasp and pull the clip out. The cartridge will then slide out of the faucet fixture.

    • 4

Insert the new Moen replacement cartridge into the single-handed faucet and press it back into place until you are able to slide the retaining clip in the slot and secure the cartridge.

    • 5

Put the handle back on the stem of the cartridge and attach it securely by tightening the small retaining screw with your Allen wrench or screwdriver.

    • 6

Turn on the water and test the faucet. If leaks still occur, take the faucet apart again and check the cartridge for damage.
