The Texas Youth Commission (TYC) is a juvenile corrections agency that oversees the state's juvenile correctional facilities. The agency is responsible for the overall care and custody of juvenile offenders. The age range of youth who are under TYC custody is between the ages of 10 and 19. The average length a juvenile remains in TYC is nine to 24 months. If a juvenile offender is in TYC custody, he or she will reside in a correctional facility, treatment center or halfway house.

      Gather personal information about the individual. Acquire as much information about the young person as possible such as first and last name, age, race, birth date, last place of residence. Obtain information regarding the arrest. Find out the city and/or county where the arrest took place.

      Contact the juvenile court in the county where the arrest took place. For example, if the young person committed a crime in Irving, Texas, he or she will be tried at the Dallas County juvenile courthouse in Dallas. In most instances judges send offenders to the Texas Youth Commission. Provide the court staff member with as much information about the person. The staff member can verify whether the person was sent to the Texas Youth Commission.

      Call the Texas Youth Commission orientation and assessment unit. After juveniles are sentenced they all are placed in an orientation facility. Females are placed in the Ron Jackson State Juvenile Correctional Complex in Brownwood, Texas which you can call at 325-641-4200 or 325-641-4201. Males are placed in the McLennan County State Juvenile Correctional Facility in Mart, Texas, which you can call at 254-297-8200 or 254-297-8200.

  • The juvenile court and/or TYC may not provide you with information unless you are the juvenile's parent, legal guardian or attorney.

  • After orientation, the juveniles are placed in correctional facilities, treatment facilities, low, medium or high security facilities or halfway houses throughout the state.
