How to Build Your Own Graphite Rod
Graphite rods can be built for conventional fishing and fly fishing. Rod building requires practice to perfect the techniques involved, but it does allow the opportunity to customize each rod. The process begins with a graphite blank, and materials are slowly added until the rod is complete. The level of difficulty varies based on the complexity of the thread wraps used. It is moderately difficult to use basic thread wraps, but advanced patterns require a high skill level.
Things You'll Need
- Graphite blank
- Gel pen
- File
- Guide spacing chart
- Tip top
- 5-minute epoxy
- Guides
- Rod-building thread
- Thread tension device
- Craft knife
- Grip
- Reel seat

1
Locate the spine on the blank by holding one end and placing the other end on a flat surface. Bend the blank slightly, allowing it to rotate into a natural curve. Mark the bent side of the rod with a gel pen to designate the spine side.

2
Measure each section of the rod and use a file to trim any section that is longer than another. All sections should be even. Use a guide spacing chart to determine the distance between each guide. Use the gel pen to mark each guide on the rod. Place the markings on the side opposite of the spine.

Mount the tip top with five-minute epoxy. Immediately after mounting, use a cloth to wipe excess epoxy from the tip. Measure for the reel seat and use the gel pen to mark the top of the seat. Measure for the grip and use the gel pen to mark the top of the grip.

4
Place the rod building thread on a thread tension device. Place the top guide on the designated marking. Wrap each guide foot with thread, working from the outside to the inside. Wrap the thread over the tag end and stop wrapping before you reach the base of the guide. Create a loop in the thread and make several wraps to secure the loop. Pull the tag end of the thread through the loop and pull until the loop is closed and the thread is secure. Cut the tag end with a craft knife. Repeat the process for each guide.

5
Wrap the top of each ferrule with 1/2 inch of thread. Use the exact same process as the guide wraps to secure the thread. Apply a two-part epoxy finish with a fine bristle brush. Use a thin coat and rotate the rod until the epoxy is dry. Apply a second coat of epoxy and rotate until dry.

6
Mount the grip with epoxy and align at the designated markings. Mount the reel seat with epoxy and align at the designated markings.

Tips & Warnings
Practice basic wraps on several cheap blanks before attempting advanced wraps on expensive blanks.
Do not use a saw or sharp materials to trim the blank. This can cause the graphite to fracture and the damage will be permanent.
