Steps for PMP Certification
Achieving a Project Management Professional (PMP) certification increases career advancement opportunities and earning potential. The credential demonstrates proficiency and competence in project management and confirms a history of relative experience and education. The Project Management Institute (PMI) is the world's largest not-for-profit professional organization for project managers. According to a PMI Salary Survey - Sixth Edition, certified individuals may increase earning potential by as much as 10% more than non-credentialed individuals. There are multiple types of project management certifications available at various education and skill levels. Therefore, it is important to choose the one that best fits individual experience and future career goals.

Complete a four-year degree and attain at least three years of project management experience. Lead and direct projects for at least 4,500 hours and attain 35 or more hours of project management education. Obtain a secondary high school diploma, five years of project management experience and 7,500 hours of project leadership in lieu of a four-year degree.

Access the Project Management Professional (PMP) certification application through the Project Management Institute website. Identify the appropriate project management certification based on individual qualifications and experience requirements. Complete the application online or download a copy and complete a paper application. Submit supporting documentation only if requested by a random audit. Take the exam within one year of receiving approval on the application, or eligibility will lapse and a new application will be required.

Prepare for the PMP examination by utilizing study materials on the PMI website. Review the handbook, study the examination guidelines and complete sample tests. Enroll in formal study courses for more detailed training and education if needed. Take the PMP examination at Prometric Testing Centers around the world once credential fees are submitted and examination scheduling instructions are received.

Maintain certification by earning 60 professional development units (PDU) every three years or according to requirements on the PMI website. Start earning PDUs any time during the three year period after the credential is awarded. Check the PMI website for updated continuing education requirements each year.
