How to Bleed Baseboard Heating

How to Bleed Baseboard Heating thumbnail
A radiator is a part of a baseboard heating system.

A hot water heating system can be used to heat homes. In this system, hot water travels from your boiler through pipes that run throughout your house. The heat is distributed through pipes that run along the baseboards or in radiators. The water circulates throughout the system, returning to the boiler to be reheated and sent through again. Air will occasionally get into the heating system. This causes noises like gurgling or bubbling, and can prevent water from circulating completely through the system. Bleeding the system can fix this problem. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Shut off the boiler and record the pressure.

    • 2

Check the self-feeding water valve to ensure that it's still connected to the boiler.

    • 3

Open up all the valves that go to the different heating zones in your home, then close all of the shutoff valves.

    • 4

Attach a short garden hose to one of the spigots on the return line (the line that takes water back to the boiler to be reheated).

    • 5

Open the self-feeding valve and spigot to drain the water into a bucket or a drain. Be careful as this water will be extremely hot. Allow the water to drain until you no longer see air bubbles. Monitor the water pressure so it doesn't rise above 25 PSI. If it does, release the self-feeding valve until it drops below that level.

    • 6

Release the self-feeding valve and close the spigot to which the hose is attached, then let the water pressure return to normal once the air bubbles have disappeared from the water.

    • 7

Repeat this process for every zone until you've bled them all.

    • 8

Close all of the zone valves and open all of the shutoff valves after you finish bleeding every zone.

    • 9

Check the water pressure to make sure it matches the level you recorded in Step 1--before you bled the system--then turn the boiler back on.
