1
Complete an undergraduate degree program. If you have not already graduated from college, an undergraduate degree in accounting will help you take the first step in the right direction. You will need to attend a school accredited by an agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. You do not necessarily have to major in accounting as an undergraduate student. Some business administration degrees will allow you to gain a significant enough background in accounting to land some entry-level government jobs.

2
Obtain a master's degree in accounting, too. While it may not be necessary for all of the available government positions in the accounting field, it can open up many more possibilities for you in the long run. Some of the higher paying and more important positions with the federal government require a master's degree. Additionally, a master's degree in accounting can provide you with the necessary coursework to become a Certified Public Accountant (CPA). Some schools, like the McCombs School of Business at the University of Texas, offer both a bachelor's and master's degree as part of a five-year joint-degree program.
