How to Telecommute With a Legal Word Processing Job
There are websites promising dreams of telecommuting and then there are websites warning you that the first websites are just scams. Many are scams and it's important to remember that any "work from home" deals that require money up front usually are simply scams. There are, however, plenty of legitimate and legal telecommuting jobs. Word processing jobs are definitely available for those who want the flexibility and freedom of working from home on their personal computers.

Consider your options; either a regular, full-time position telecommuting or performing freelance services from your home. If you like the security of a full-time, regular position, you can investigate options with your current (or recent) employer or seek out a new position. If your current position can be performed from home, pitch the idea to your boss with a clear outline of how it will benefit your company. If your position cannot be performed from home, search out a new position that can.
If you consider freelancing, contemplate both local and online networking contacts and possibilities. Make a list of everyone you think could potentially provide work for you. Search out freelancing opportunities online (see Resources).

2
Develop an "office" workspace at home. This can be at a desk---many telecommuters find that it helps their productivity to have a more traditional environment. Others prefer to sit on the couch or in a big easy chair. Whatever you choose, make sure you have adequate light, sufficient back support, and plenty of storage. You can use an entire extra room as your office or simply an extra bookcase with your files.

Track your money, especially if you freelance. For those working from home with a regular position, your money should be handled relatively the same as if you were in a traditional business. Some employers may prefer to mail you a check, do direct deposit into your bank account, or pay you through an online vendor such as PayPal. Whatever decision is made, check to make sure everything is working regularly and you are getting your money into your bank account one way or another. If you freelance, keep records of every job you do, so that you can make sure you get paid for each service you provide. You can also claim expenses for working at home on your taxes, so keep receipts for every dollar you spend on your home business.

Make sure you have appropriate hardware and software for your job(s). An up-to-date computer is helpful, but adequate back-up storage is more important. Any software helpful for your job should be purchased (remember to deduct it if you are freelancing).

5
Get working. Make sure you track your hours if necessary and communicate everything to your employer(s).

Tips & Warnings
If you legitimately work from home and earn a significant income, you can deduct a certain amount, about $5,000, from your taxable income for office expenses without itemizing. Check with your accountant for specifics.
