How to Use a Minnow Trap for Crawfish

How to Use a Minnow Trap for Crawfish thumbnail
Use minnow traps to catch crawfish for bait or consumption.

A minnow trap is a mesh container with a hole on one side. When bait is placed into the trap, minnows swim into the hole to feed and then get trapped within the mesh container. You can also use these traps to catch crawfish. Crawfish are small crustaceans, much like their larger cousins lobsters. Crawfish can be trapped using the same methods as minnows.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Place the chopped up fresh fish bait into the trap's bait box. The key to catching crawfish is using fresh cut up fish, such as perch, bass or crappie. Place the bait box towards the back end of the trap.

    • 2

Slide a rope buoy over the nylon rope and mark it with a code you will recognize when placed with other traps. Tie the rope to the trap.

    • 3

Drop the trap into the water to trap the crawfish. Look for muddy bottoms where there is a slight cold water current. Let the trap settle to the bottom of the water.

    • 4

Tie the end of the rope to a tree or post along the water's edge and return after a day to check the trap. Bring a bait bucket to transfer the crawfish into after pulling them out of the water.
