How to Clean a Nebulizer Machine

A nebulizer is a device that takes liquid medications such as albuterol (for asthma) and compresses it into a particle form called aerosol. This allows the medication to be inhaled directly into the lungs for fast action, usually working within three to 15 minutes.

It is important to clean your nebulizer after every use. Doing this correctly keeps the function and effectiveness of the nebulizer at its peak performance and stops the spread of germs and bacteria.

Instructions

    • 1

Unplug the nebulizer. Remove the mask/mouthpiece from the T-shaped part called the "T-piece." Remove T-piece from the dome and cup of the nebulizer. Remove the tubing and set aside for visual inspection. Do not wash the tubing.

    • 2

Run the mask/mouthpiece and T-piece under warm water for at least 30 seconds. Rinse in a bowl of sterile or distilled water.

    • 3

Set the pieces to air dry on a clean towel. Inspect the tubing for wear like rips and cloudy or burnt coloration. Ensure the tubing attaches correctly to the nebulizer. If any obvious wear is found, replace the tubing.

    • 4

Reassemble the mouth piece, T-piece and tubing back onto the nebulizer. Attach the nebulizer to the compressor and turn on for 20 to 30 seconds. This will dry the insides of the device.

    • 5

Disconnect the nebulizer and tubing from the compressor. Make sure all parts of the nebulizer are dry before storing to avoid mold and bacteria growth. Cover the compressor.

Tips & Warnings

  • For peak performance, replace tubes as soon as possible if there are any signs of wear.

  • Make sure the compressor is unplugged before cleaning.
