How to Use the Instrument Approach on a Garmin 196

An "Aviation" mode shows the nearest navaids, airports, points of communication and airspace boundaries.

Garmin's GPSMap 196 Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver is geared towards aviation. The display is a 12-level gray scale LCD with backlight. The keypad is backlit for night operation. An "Aviation" mode shows the nearest navaids, airports, points of communication and airspace boundaries. Runway data and communication frequencies can be retrieved for destinations. Flight plans (routes) can be created, and the device can also be used to select and navigate an approach.

Instructions

Select and Navigate an Approach for a Saved Route

1. Press the "Menu" button twice and highlight "Route" from the tabs. Highlight the name of the route and press "Enter."

2. Press "Menu" to open the "Options" menu. Highlight "Select Approach" and press "Enter."

3. Use the rocker switch to select the approach from the window and press "Enter." Follow the approach on the GPSMaps 196 screen.

Select and Navigate an Approach for the Destination Airport

1. Press the button marked "Direct To" to open the Goto window.

2. Press "Menu" to open the "Options" menu. Highlight "Select Approach" and press "Enter."

3. Use the rocker switch to select the approach from the window and press "Enter." A "Vectors?" window will show. Use the rocker switch to select "Yes" and press "Enter." The destination airport is removed from the Goto window and is replaced with the approach waypoints. Follow the approach on the GPSMaps 196 screen.
