How to List References for Jobs
Your resume provides a written snapshot of your employment experience and skills. To obtain your dream job, you must devote time and effort to creating the perfect resume. But while this clear, concise resume is important, do not forget the importance of your reference list. Many employers require at least three references. Use careful thought and consideration when picking your references because reputable references will get you one step closer to that dream job.
Instructions

-
1
Make a preliminary list of references who have knowledge about your work habits and ethics. Consider using former employers, coworkers, teachers or anyone who can speak positively about your knowledge, skills and abilities. Narrow the list based on who you believe can help set you apart from other applicants.
-
2
Obtain permission from your chosen references by contacting each person individually. Speaking to your references gives you the opportunity to determine whether you should include them on your reference list. Do not use a reference if you sense hesitance and never assume a person will provide a reference without contacting him or her first.
-
-
3
Provide each reference with a copy of your resume to ensure he or she understands your interests and goals. Providing your resume to your reference also ensures there are no discrepancies or incorrect information. For example, if you list your job title or duties incorrectly, a previous employer can inform you of the mistake. Thank each reference for his or her time and help.
-
4
Create your reference list on a separate sheet of paper. There is no need to list your references on your resume. Do not add "references available upon request" to your resume -- most employers assume you know references are required.
-
5
Single-space and center the word "References" on the first line, center "for" on the second line, center your name on the third line and center your email address on the fourth line. Hit "Return" twice.
-
6
Align your reference information to the left. List reference name, title, department, company, address, phone number and email address. Each item should be on a separate line.
Name
Title
Department
Company
Address
City, state and zip code
Phone number
Email address
Hit "Return" twice and list your next reference in the same format.

Tips & Warnings
The reference list and resume should be on the same type of resume paper. Use the same font and font size on your resume.
Do not use relatives as references.
Make sure your reference's name is spelled correctly. Use the correct salutations. For example, the salutation for a professor with a Ph.D. is Dr. regardless of gender. If your reference does not hold a doctorate, use Mr. or Ms.
Include a salutation with non-gender-neutral names such as Jamie, Alex or Jordan.
Your name on your reference list should match your name on your resume. For example, if you include your middle initial on your resume, include your initial on your reference list.
