Zipper replacement can save a favorite jacket or pair of jeans.

When digging out clothing for the new season, you notice that a jacket or pair of pants has a broken zipper. It is likely that your first thought is to throw the clothing out, but there is no need to. Replacing the broken zipper will only take a small amount of time and effort, and it will save the clothing, which is in good shape otherwise, from ending up in the trash.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the old zipper with the seam ripper. Take care to remove only the stitches pertaining to the zipper.

    • 2

Use the cloth measuring tape to measure the old zipper, once it is removed. Write down the length, go to a crafting or sewing store and find a new zipper that is similar in size.

    • 3

Place the new zipper onto the area, where the old zipper was, and use pins to secure it. Thread a needle and tack the zipper in place. The act of tacking the zipper into place --- running the thread in and out of the fabric just to hold it together --- is also known as a basting stitch.

    • 4

Use the sewing machine to sew the zipper securing into place. Secure the end of the zipper with the zipper foot to ensure that the pull does not go off track.
