Dry ice is used to keep items cold for a longer period of time than regular ice. Dry ice has a temperature of -109 degrees Fahrenheit. It converts into carbon dioxide gas as it becomes warmer and doesn't leave any liquid behind like traditional ice does. It has no color or odor and forms when carbon dioxide gas solidifies. There are several forms of dry ice, including high-density dry ice pellets, dry ice rice pellets, standard pellets and blocks of dry ice.
- CO2 cylinder
- Heavy gloves
- Goggles
- Ice bag
- Thick jar
Put on safety gloves and goggles. Put the ice bag over the nozzle of the CO2 tank and release CO2 for 20 seconds. Turn the nozzle off.
Put the contents of the bag into the jar. This will be the dry ice created by the CO2.
Put the ice into an insulated but not airtight container. An airtight container will cause the gas pressure to build so that it may explode.
