How to Open an Envelope Without Detection
Opening an envelope without others knowing that you did requires a little ingenuity. While many people use electronic forms of communication, traditional snail mail is still in use for professional letters and other documentation. The classic -- and still in use -- method for opening an envelope secretly is to steam it open. This dissolves the original glue on the envelope and is difficult to detect if done correctly.
Instructions

1
Boil water on your stove. While a kettle works best due to the direct stream of steam, a small pot can also work.
-
2
Hold the envelope over the steam. You will need to wear an oven mitt or use tongs to not burn your hand.
-
-
3
Remove the envelope from the steam in about 30 seconds.
-
4
Slide a thin-bladed knife between the envelope and its flap. This will help you determine if the glue has fully dissolved.
-
5
Hold the envelope over the steam for an additional 30 seconds if necessary.
-
6
Open the envelope slowly with the knife. Going slowly, slide the knife blade again through the glue to open the flap.
-
7
Seal the envelope with small dabs of any household glue. Wipe any excess off the envelope.

Tips & Warnings
Be sure to not hold the envelope too closely to the steam. This can result in warping the paper with excessive moisture.
Tampering with mailed letters is a federal offense.
