How to Set a Formal Place Setting
Fast family meals and take-out dinners don't give us much opportunity to enjoy the grace and beauty of a formal table setting. But that doesn't make it a lost art. A properly-set table creates a true sense of elegance when entertaining friends or enjoying a holiday celebration. It takes a little extra effort but adds a touch of class to any occasion. Things You'll Need
- Napkin
- Salad fork
- Dinner folk
- Dessert fork
- Soup bowl
- Dinner plate
- Dinner knife
- Teaspoon
- Soup spoon
- Water glass
- Red wine glass
- White wine glass
- Bread and butter plate
- Butter knife
- Oyster fork
- Linen tablecloth
Instructions

Start in the Center

After you've laid down a crisp linen table cloth, place a dinner plate directly in front of each chair. Place a soup bowl on top of each plate.

Start on the left hand side. Place a dessert fork next to the plate followed by a dinner fork, salad fork and oyster fork. Put a napkin left of the forks.

Set a dinner knife on the right hand of the plate with the cutting edge towards the plate. Put a teaspoon next to the knife. A soup spoon goes on the outer right .

Put a bread and butter plate directly above the forks. Lay a butter knife horizontally across the plate.

Place a water glass above and slightly to the left of the dinner fork. Put a red wine glass to the right of the water glass. Put a white wine glass to the right of the red wine glass.
