How to Find DBA Information

Reaching out to entrepreneurs who have already filed a DBA is an excellent way to find more information.

When you set up your business as a DBA, or "doing business as," your business or trade name is not the same as your legal name. There are plenty of places to find information about creating a DBA, the legalities of a DBA and operating under a DBA. Each state has a slightly different way of setting up a DBA, so check with your local small business office. For general information, you can consult the Internet or books.

Instructions

1. Consult the online DBA filing requirements found Business.gov. You will need to register the business name and may need to fill out separate applications for trade name registration.

2. Go to your county clerk's office. In many states, this is where you file your DBA.

3. Call or go to your state's business office website. Ask for information about setting up or operating under a DBA. Some states, such as Texas, require two filings.

4. Talk to people and small-business owners in your local area who have set up a DBA. You can contact a professor who teaches business classes, speak to an entrepreneur in your field, or call your local small business office.

5. Consult your local librarian. She can direct you to any books or reference materials the library has on the subject of DBAs.
