How to Find the Model Year on Boat Motors

As is the case with most motors, boat motors contain a serial or model number that will help identify the year that the motor was manufactured. Knowing the model year of a boat motor is important if you are planning to purchase a used boat. Without knowledge of the model year, it is possible that you may be purchasing a boat with an extremely old motor attached to it.

Instructions

Locate the motor. Depending on the type and size of the boat, the motor will be located on the back or on the lower level of the boat. If you cannot find it, look in the owner's manual of the boat for reference.

Locate the nameplate on the front of the motor. This should be a small metal plaque that's easily visible as you look at the motor. Find the model number and write it down on a sheet of paper. The model number has coded information that contains the year of the motor.

Navigate to the Marine Engine website (see References). Enter the model number in the appropriate field and click "Search" to find the model year of the motor.
