How to Design a Garage Sale Sign

How to Design a Garage Sale Sign thumbnail
A well-designed garage sale sign advertises more than just the fact there is a sale.

A garage sale is an easy way to turn a profit from unwanted items. But you can't sell much if people can't find your garage sale, which is why a well-designed sign is a must. A garage sale sign alerts potential shoppers to your sale and helps them find their way to your garage--where they may also find lots of bargains. Designing a garage sale sign takes only a little forethought and no extra skill beyond the ability to print clearly and largely.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose the locations for your yard sale signs. Display them on major streets and along the route from those streets to your house. Use the locations to determine where to put the arrows or directional information on each sign.

    • 2

Create a sign template. Lay out the general information for each sign using pencil on a piece of paper. Include the words "Yard Sale" or "Garage Sale," the date and time of the sale, and any big ticket items such as furniture, expensive toys or jewelry, that will be offered, as well as the address.

    • 3

Include a prominent arrow or directions such as "Left at the next traffic light," to guide shoppers to your garage sale.

    • 4

Assess your paper template to make sure that your design features the most important information prominently and is clear and easy to read. Adjust your design if necessary. "Garage Sale" and the date, time, and directions or directional arrow should all be immediately visible.

    • 5

Use light-colored poster board for the sign and dark markers to make it easy to read. Use two colors of marker for alternating pieces of information. For example, write "Garage Sale" in one color, followed by the date and time in a second color, followed by the items being offered in the first color.

    • 6

Using markers, print the information clearly on each sign according to your paper template. Hang the signs from telephone poles or fences, if permitted, using tape or a staple gun.

Tips & Warnings

  • Including big ticket items like furniture and popular toys on your sign increases the traffic to your yard sale.

  • Yard sale signs placed in violation of your town's ordinances may be removed.
