How to Convert a GED Score

A GED score can be turned into a high school or collegiate grade point average.

Know what a GED score really means. Some people, for whatever reason, did not have the opportunity to graduate from high school and further their education. Their only option was to obtain their GED which stands for General Education Development. However, after receiving their GED scores, they may not know how to read it, since it doesn't match the four-point grading system of most high schools. You can convert your GED score mathematically into the four-point system. The conversion only provides estimations but it does give a good general idea about what your score really means.

Instructions

1. Determine your average GED score. There is no definitive way to do this, but you can start by dividing your total score by the number of sections in your test you took. For example, if your total score was 3000 and there were five sections in your GED test (which is common), your GED score would average 600 (3000 divided by 5).

2. Apply a rough conversion to determine the GPA. If your average score ranks below 300, then your estimated GPA would be between 0 and 1.0. An average score between 300 and 400 would estimate a GPA between 1.5 and 1.9. A GED score between 401 and 500 would mean your estimated GPA is 2.0 to 2.9. An average GED score between 501 and 600 would estimate a GPA of 3.0 to 3.4. A GED score of 601 to 700 is a GPA between 3.5 and 3.7. A GED average score between 701 and 800 is a GPA of 3.8 to 4.0.

3. Understand what the conversion means. A GPA of 0 means poor. A GPA of 1 is considered below average. A GPA of 2 is average. A GPA of 3 is considered good. Finally, a GPA of 4 equals excellence.
