How to Clean a Nalgene
Nalgene drinking bottles are a useful and durable addition to camping, hiking or travel gear. Their rugged construction and many available sizes make these containers ideal for that next great adventure. What sometimes happens, however, is they get left in a backpack or the back of the car only to be found later in serious need of a good cleaning. Proper cleaning will keep these tough bottles in good shape for many years.

1
Fill your Nalgene with warm soapy water, or warm water and 1 tsp. of lemon juice. Allow the bottle to soak for 15 to 20 minutes before scrubbing with a bottle brush. These methods will take care of the normal soiling and slight odors associated with daily use.
-
2
Drop a Nalgene cleaning tablet or an unflavored denture cleaning tablet into the Nalgene and fill with warm water. Allow the tablet to dissolve completely and soak for about an hour. Rinse the bottle well with warm water. This is a great option for on-the-go cleaning.

3
Place a mixture of 1 tbsp. of bleach per cup of room temperature water in the Nalgene and soak for several hours or overnight. This will remove any stubborn stains that may have discolored the bottle. Rinse the bottle thoroughly with warm water and dry completely before storing.
-
4
Dry Nalgene bottles completely before replacing the lids. Trapped water can quickly cause a musty odor or promote mold growth.
