How to Sell Daylilies

How to Sell Daylilies thumbnail
Daylilies grow in a number of colors.

Vigorous and adaptable daylilies are part of the Hemerocallis family; these perennials are not considered true lilies. Thankfully for growers and sellers, daylilies adapt to a wide range of soil and light conditions and survive even in cold conditions. One established, a plant can endure many years in the garden and produce an abundance of flower buds.

Instructions

    • 1

Register your daylilies with the American Hemerocallis Society online or through regular mail. The AHS keeps track of daylily sellers, making sure customers are buying real daylilies. The AHS requires good quality photographs of the plants.

    • 2

Plant and raise the daylilies by the AHS standards. The AHS has specific guidelines about certain characteristics of the plant, including its height, when it blooms, flower diameter, patterns and other plant habits.

    • 3

Advertise the daylilies as "AHS approved." Make flyers to hand out at garden shows or to pass out door-to-door to interested customers.

    • 4

Contact the local farmer's market. A farmer's market is a great place to sell fresh daylilies, make connections with other venders and get experience selling flowers. Get in touch with a local florist to see if you can establish a partnership.

Consider forming or joining a flower cooperative. This is especially easy if there are many growers nearby. All members of the cooperative buy collectively to get the best price, and they can sell one another's flowers.

    • 6

Set up a website with photos and flower information. Pay for online ads in major search engines to generate more traffic. Your website should be configured to take orders from customers and alert you when orders are placed.

    • 7

Price flowers accordingly. See how other daylily vendors are pricing their flowers; the goal is to sell out, minimizing waste, so sell them for lower prices if you must. The flower market is especially competitive for new sellers, so it is important to get the attention of new customers at first sight. When selling the daylilies at a farmers market or stand, price them at $5, $10, $15 or in easy increments to make the purchasing experience quick and easy.

Use green floral tissue and ribbon to wrap up the flowers for the customers to take home.
