How to Create a Bouffant
If only one hairstyle could sum up the fashion sense of the late 1950s and early 1960s, it would be the bouffant. It was during these years that big hair was synonymous with big style. But the bouffant did not make its first appearance during the Eisenhower administration. One of its earliest debuts occurred on Marie Antoinette's head. Like most trends in the fashion world, what is old is new again. The bouffant is back and it is beckoning you to tease your hair into its hair-raising heights. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Shampoo and condition your hair. Towel-dry your hair to remove excess water. Comb out your hair gently with a wide-tooth comb.
-
2
Distribute a generous amount of mousse throughout your damp hair. Avoid applying mouse to your scalp. Blow-dry your hair while positioning your head upside-down. Sit down while doing this if standing feels awkward or uncomfortable. In this position, your hair is not flat against your head so it will have more volume when it is dry. Continue blow-drying until your hair is completely dry.

3
Gather two sections of hair from the crown of your head. The first section contains the hair at the front of the crown. The second section contains the hair at the back of the crown. Keep the second section out of the way by gathering it into a ponytail.
-
4
Back comb the first section of hair with a fine-tooth comb. Grasp this section of hair as close to the ends as possible and pull up so that your hair is perpendicular to your head. Position the fine-tooth comb at the ends of the hair and comb downward toward your head. This is also called teasing your hair. Continue doing this until the first section of hair has become quite "big."
-
5
Lightly comb the first section of hair normally to remove any tangles or knots that may have formed while back combing. Make sure to retain the volume you created while teasing the hair. Use either the fine or wide-tooth comb depending on which one works better for you.
-
6
Remove the second section of hair from the ponytail. Combine all of your hair together and form it into a bun or French twist at the back of your head. Do not pull the hair back too much or you will lose the volume you created in the first section of hair. Loosen a few strands of hair from your temples or from around your ears to create a softer, less-polished look.
-
7
Spray your hair generously with hairspray to set the look. Use your fingers to make any final adjustments to the placement of your hair, if necessary.
