How to Clean an Air Filter for a Nitro Car

How to Clean an Air Filter for a Nitro Car thumbnail
You must clean and oil your foam air filter after several tanks of fuel.

Cleaning and oiling your Nitro RC polyurethane-foam oil filter regularly will prevent engine damage. If the air filter is not properly oiled, an engine can be destroyed in less than 10 minutes. The air filter uses filter oil to trap dirt and the air filter should be cleaned and oiled again after using several tanks of fuel. Filter oil can be purchased from a motorcycle or automotive shop.

Instructions

    • 1

Put on your rubber gloves. Clean the area around your carburetor using a bristle brush to prevent dirt from falling into the engine's intake while you remove the air filter.

    • 2

Cut the tie that holds your air filter in place and remove the entire housing.

    • 3

Separate the foam air filter from the housing.

    • 4

Clean the air filter mount assembly with a clean rag and some ethanol.

    • 5

Spray the air filter with motor spray or nitro cleaner and carefully work the product through the foam filter until it is white again. Wash the foam air filter with soap and water and rinse well. Allow to air dry.

    • 6

Place your fully dried foam air filter in a plastic bag and apply a generous amount of foam filter oil into the bag and work it through with your fingers. The foam air filter should be the color of the filter oil.

    • 7

Remove the oiled air filter from the bag and place it in the middle of some paper towel to remove excess filter oil. The air filter needs to be covered in oil, but not dripping. Too much oil will restrict air flow.

    • 8

Place the air filter back in the filter mount and reinstall it onto your carburetor. Use a zip tie to secure the filter onto the carburetor to prevent the air filter from being ejected in the event of a collision.

Tips & Warnings

  • A fail-safe measure would require you place a bead of grease around the ends of your air filter where contact is made with the filter mount. This is to ensure dirt particles will not enter your engine.
