How to Get an International Drivers License in New Jersey

International Drivers Permits are issued by the AAA.

An international driving permit is required by most countries if a U.S. citizen wants to operate a motor vehicle while overseas. The international driving permit is not actually a license on its own. Americans driving overseas must still carry their state-issued driving license while operating a motor vehicle. The international driving permit attests to the validity of the holder's driving license with translations into 10 foreign languages. In New Jersey, AAA issues international driving permits through its local offices.

Things You'll Need

• Valid U.S. driving license
• $15 application fee
• Two passport-sized photos
• International driving-permit application

Instructions

1. Find your local New Jersey AAA branch office. A link to the Mid-Atlantic AAA branch locator is in the Resources section of this article.

2. Complete the AAA's international driving-permit application, available at the local office.

3. Submit the application, fee, passport photos and valid U.S. driving license to the AAA representative. The representative will issue the international driving permit on the spot.

Tips & Warnings

• International driving permits are valid for only one year. If you will be traveling an extended period, but not leaving immediately, ask for the validity of the permit to begin closer to your departure date. The AAA representative can make your permit start later.
