How to Clean Rust Off of Parkerizing

Many people parkerize guns.

Parkerizing steel involves the application of a phosphate conversion coating to prevent rust and general wear. Many people parkerize guns, for example, to keep the steel in top condition. The bad news is, any sign of rust means the parkerizing has worn off. Once you remove the rust, it is important to re-parkerize your steel to ensure the rust does not return.

Things You'll Need

• Anti-corrosive spray
• Lubricant
• Cloth

Instructions

1. Spray the rusted area with an anti-corrosive spray.

2. Wait for a couple of minutes for the anti-corrosive agent to seep into the rust.

3. Wipe the parkerizing with a cloth. The rust should come away easily. Reapply anti-corrosive agent and clean again if not all the rust comes off first time.

4. Apply lubricant to the parkerizing. This will stop the oxygen getting at the steel and prevent rusting in future.
