Familiarize yourself with tarot card meanings. There are 78 cards in traditional tarot decks with the Fantastical Tarot deck as one interpretation of the most commonly found Rider-Waite deck. Tarot card decks contain major and minor arcana cards. One of the major arcana cards is the High Priestess, which signifies knowledge, education, wisdom, and secrets or secrecy. Her meaning when reversed (upside down) is immorality, lack of emotional stability, vanity, superficiality, or sometimes passion. Another card in the major arcana is the Wheel of Fortune, which signifies karmic change, when reversed signifies a turn of bad luck. The minor arcana cards are divided into suits. In general, wands signify creativity and movement. Cups signify emotions and spiritual experience. The swords are the suit of intellect, thought and reason. The pentacles give meaning to practicality, security and material concerns such as money.

Shuffle the deck of cards and then cut them or ask the client to cut them if the reading is for someone else. Cutting the deck is part of the process of centering energy or setting intent. The cards and reader focus on the message sought during the shuffling and cutting process.

Set the cards on a flat surface in the desired formation. There are many different card spreads, such as a five-card spread, which reveals influences affecting the immediate past, present and future; or a Celtic cross spread, which reveals all influences and an eventual outcome. Choose the spread appropriate for the type of response needed. Additionally, one card can be drawn for a quick "yes" or "no" answer.

    • 4

Turn the cards over. The order in which they are turned over doesn't matter as long as they are all turned in the same direction each time a spread is drawn. For example, don't turn some cards from left to right and others right to left. The card's meaning is very different when reversed, so turning the cards the same way will keep the messages consistent and accurate.

Deliver the message. Tarot reading interpretations are intuitive, so intuition must be used when interpreting the message. For example, the High Priestess is the card of knowledge in general and secret knowledge in specific. Your interpretation might be that someone has a secret they are withholding that may cause great harm. The intuitive reading of each card should vary slightly depending on the reading and the other cards present. Study card meanings to give a correct interpretation of how secret knowledge might play into your reading.
